1. It is with great sadness that I announce the death of
Rear Admiral George D. Passmore, USCG (retired), who passed away on
June 26, 2022, in Orlando, Florida, at the age of 88.
2. By order of the Commandant, and IAW REF (A), the National Ensign
shall be flown at half-mast on all Coast Guard buildings, grounds,
and vessels not underway from sunrise until sunset on Tuesday,
October 4, 2022, in honor of RADM Passmore.
3. Born on December 5, 1933 in Brooklyn, New York, RADM Passmore
was raised in British Columbia, Canada, and was a 1957 graduate of
the U.S. Coast Guard Academy. He earned a Master's degree in
Electrical Engineering from the Air Force Institute of Technology
at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in 1965.
4. Following graduation, RADM Passmore served on board the
Coast Guard Cutter COOK INLET in Portland, Maine. In March 1960,
he was designated a Coast Guard Aviator, subsequently serving in
his native Brooklyn, New York and at the Coast Guard Air Station in
Annette, Alaska. He then served as the Coast Guard Aircraft Repair
and Supply Center in Elizabeth City, North Carolina where he
designed new electronics systems for Coast Guard aircraft. After
serving as Chief of the Avionics Branch in the Aeronautical
Engineering Division at Coast Guard Headquarters in
Washington, D.C., RADM Passmore became the executive officer of
the Coast Guard Air Station at Corpus Christi, Texas. In 1976, he
had the dual command of Coast Guard Air Station North Bend and
Group Coos Bay, Oregon. Two years later he commanded Group Corpus
Christi and Air Station Corpus Christi. From 1980 to 1983,
Rear Admiral Passmore served as the Chief of the Management Analysis
Division at Coast Guard Headquarters. He then moved to Honolulu,
Hawaii where he was Chief of Operations in the Fourteenth Coast
Guard District.
5. Appointed to Flag Rank in 1985, RADM Passmore returned to
New York as the Deputy Atlantic Area Commander and Chief of Staff
for the Maritime Defense Zone Atlantic. In 1989 he assumed command
of the Third Coast Guard District.
6. RADM Passmore retired from the Coast Guard in 1992. In retirement
he was known to keep busy with volunteer work and play golf and
tennis.
7. Rear Admiral Passmore is survived by his wife, the former Rita H.
of Revelstoke, British Columbia, their son, Robert, a retired
Supervisory Special Agent of the Internal Revenue Service, and two
beloved granddaughters, Victoria and Elizabeth Passmore, whom he
cherished very much.
8. An inurnment service will be held for RADM Passmore at 1130 on
October 4, 2022 at the United States Coast Guard Academy
