SUBJ: CAPT FREDIE CITED FOR EXCELLENCE
1. Captain (CAPT) Michael S. Fredie, Director of Admissions, U.S.
Coast Guard Academy, is the Coast Guard (CG) recipient of the 2022
Blacks In Government (BIG) Military Meritorious Service Award.
Within the CG, this award honors personnel who have significantly
supported and contributed to its missions and whose attributes best
epitomized the qualities and Core Values of Honor, Respect, and
Devotion to Duty.
2. Under CAPT Fredie's leadership, the admissions team prioritized
outreach opportunities and recruitment within underserved
populations to produce robust, high-quality applicant pools. His
work to admit diverse academy classes of outstanding candidates has
directly transformed the Coast Guard's officer corps. Of the 243
seniors recently commissioned from the Class of 2022, 87 were
underrepresented minority (URM) cadets, and the current Corps of
Cadets includes 38-percent URMs and 40-percent women, nearly double
that of the other Federal Service Academies. CAPT Fredie also
reimagined the CGA Admissions' flagship recruiting event, the
Academy Introduction Mission (AIM), to now yield higher quality
applicants by shifting to a more holistic experience for attendees.
3. The Coast Guard is proud of, and commends, CAPT Fredie for his
outstanding leadership, achievements, and commitment to fostering a
diverse and inclusive Coast Guard. BIG will officially recognize his
achievements during their 43rd National Training Institute, Military
Meritorious Service Award Ceremony, on Tuesday, August 16, 2022.
4. The following nominee is also noted for his excellent effort:
LCDR Samud Looney, Sector Puget Sound.
5. Civil Rights awards programs help maximize the Coast Guard's
overall mission effectiveness by fostering a discrimination free
environment by recognizing members' accomplishments and
contributions to civil rights, equal opportunity, minority
communities, and Partnership in Education (PIE) programs. Learn more
