SUBJ: DR. DEKOVEN IS CITED FOR EXCELLENCE
1. Dr. Aram DeKoven, Chief Diversity Officer (CDO), United States
Coast Guard Academy (CGA), is the Coast Guard's 2022 National
Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) Roy
Wilkins Renown Service Award recipient. He is recognized as a fierce
advocate for civil rights, a champion for Diversity, Equity, and
Inclusion (DE&I), and the embodiment of the Service's core values of
Honor, Respect and Devotion to Duty.
2. As the CGA's CDO, Dr. DeKoven, serves as the principal advisor to
the Superintendent for DE&I. He directed several policy reforms
during the award period, including guidance on CGA's transgender
service. Advancing discussion on culture and race, Dr. DeKoven
established a lecture series that encouraged DE&I thought leaders
from outside the CGA to share their research and experiences with
cadets. Dr. deKoven also led a series of training sessions for
civilian and military faculty on inclusive teaching approaches.
Additionally, to expand the DE&I acumen of emerging leaders in the
Coast Guard, he initiated baseline training for new cadets,
introducing ideas, definitions, and concepts throughout the 200-week
CGA program.
3. The Coast Guard is proud of and commends Dr. DeKoven for his
outstanding leadership, achievements, and commitment to fostering a
diverse and inclusive Service. NAACP will recognize him at the 113th
NAACP National Convention in Atlantic City, NJ, on July 19, 2022.
4. The following nominees are also noted for outstanding
contributions to the Coast Guard and the advancement of minimized
individuals in the Armed Forces and civilian service: LTJG Aarica
Carrington, TRACEN Cape May; LT Tracie Ham, Atlantic Area; and CSCS
Vernon Joiner, USCGC STONE.
5. Civil Rights awards help maximize the Coast Guard's overall
mission effectiveness through recognition of members'
accomplishments and contributions to civil rights and equal
opportunity in minority communities and Partnership in Education
