SUBJ: JUNETEENTH NATIONAL INDEPENDENCE DAY
1. Juneteenth (a month and date fusion) recognizes the day in 1865
when Major General Gordon Granger entered Galveston, Texas to inform
more than 200,000 enslaved Black Americans that their freedom from
the bondage of slavery had been decreed over two-and-a-half years
earlier by the Emancipation Proclamation. Since then, June 19th has
been observed as a marker of the de facto end of the institution of
slavery in the United States. In 2021, the Juneteenth National
Independence Day Act officially recognized Juneteenth as a federal
holiday.
2. As Americans, we share in the important history of Juneteenth
and the overcoming of a troubled chapter in our nation. As a Coast
Guard, we continue efforts to support an inclusive culture that
promotes diversity, equity, and inclusion in alignment with our
Service's Core Values.
3. I urge the workforce to learn more about the Juneteenth
observance by visiting the following webpages, and by creating
opportunities that raise awareness of its meaning, promote deeper
understanding, and further unit cohesion.
