1. This ALCOAST announces the 2021/2022 Coast Guard ICS
Certification Board results, which convened March 28 -
April 01, 2022 in accordance with REFs (A) through (C).
2. The Coast Guard ICS Certification Board was established in
2011 to recommend Coast Guard personnel who have demonstrated ICS
expertise and proficiency at the highest levels for certification.
As Type 1 and Type 2 ICS competencies have been promulgated
globally by key industry organizations and stakeholders; Coast
Guard ICS certification transcends the internal competency
management system making the recipient an internationally
recognized response professional. The Coast Guard ICS Certification
Board was originally modeled after the National Wildland Fire
Coordination Group's ICS Competency Review process. This foundation,
in addition to the continued refinement efforts by The Office of
Emergency Management and Disaster Response (CG-OEM), ensures all
applicants are held to the highest level of rigor.
3. The 2021/2022 Board reviewed 102 applications resulting in 80
certifications recommended. COMDT (CG-OEM) looks forward to seeing
the upward trend of applications for Type 1 and Type 2 ICS
Certifications as our Service continues to support unprecedented
interagency response operations.

completed prior to final certification. Course requirements will
be noted in the correspondence sent to the member.

5. Recipients should expect to receive certificates electronically
via the email address provided in their applications.
The recipient's Servicing Personnel Office or Civilian equivalent
should utilize the certificate to confirm awarded competency for
official record entry.
6. The annual Coast Guard ICS Certification Board is a fully
qualified board. The most common reasons that members are not
recommended for certification include the lack of real-world
experience in the position sought at the Type 1 or Type 2 level
and/or the applicant's experience not aligning with the
certification that is being sought per REF (D). To maximize
certification opportunity, the Board is authorized per REF (A) to
make recommendations based on the experience and capacity
represented in the application submitted. This includes
recommending a Type 2 in lieu of Type 1 certification
and an appropriate alternate certification plainly evidenced in the
application.
7. Each year, COMDT (CG-OEM) implements Board feedback to improve
the application submission and review process as well as current
guidance. Applicants and ICS Coordinators can expect to see process
improvements as well as successful application tips detailed in the
ICS Certification Board Guide annually. Furthermore, COMDT (CG-OEM)
amplifies the information contained in the Guide each fall through
webinars, sample applications, and announcements all posted to the
COMDT (CG-OEM-2) ICS Program and Coordinator CGPortal Page.
8. Members seeking to apply for Type 1 and Type 2 ICS certification
must consult their unit ICS Coordinator. Application guidance,
including REF (D) and all applicable forms can be found on the
COMDT (CG-OEM-2) ICS Program and Coordinator CGPortal Page:
