SUBJ: 2021 LEAGUE OF UNITED LATIN AMERICAN CITIZENS (LULAC)
EXCELLENCE IN SERVICE AWARD RECIPIENT
1. The Coast Guard congratulates Lieutenant Commander (LCDR) Marc
Mares, Reserve Logistics Department Head, USCG Sector San Francisco,
CA, as the 2021 League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC)
Excellence in Service Award recipient. The distinction recognizes
outstanding individuals who advance diversity, education, economics,
and health in communities with large under-represented populations.
2. LCDR Mares' passion for fitness and youth mentoring led him to
create a middle and high school distance running team in West
Oakland, CA, to develop student-athletes in the community.
During the pandemic, LCDR Mares supported Oakland Military Institute
and Latitude High School by hosting workouts using virtual
technology three times a week and offering assistance with college
and scholarship applications to the seniors. He dedicated over 300
hours to support students from ten different ethnicities. Along with
the support of assistant coaches, LCDR Mares' teams stressed fitness
and promoted leadership, community involvement, and academic
excellence. In addition, LCDR Mares helped senior student-athletes
by writing college letters of recommendation, proofreading essays,
conducting mock interviews, and researching scholarship
opportunities. As a result, seniors who he assisted earned
acceptance to multiple schools with generous scholarships and
financial aid packages, with one student earning a highly
selective, four-year scholarship to an Ivy League school.
3. The Coast Guard is proud of LCDR Mares' outstanding leadership,
achievements, and commitment to fostering a diverse and inclusive
Coast Guard. He will be officially recognized during the LULAC
virtual award ceremony at a later date.
4. The Coast Guard also highlights the following members for their
dedication and commitment to furthering the development and
empowerment of their communities: MK2 Jose R. Villafuerte, MSST
New York; Mr. Felix Soto, Jr., CG Community Services Command, VA;
and Cadet Naylina Tamariz, USCG Academy, New London, CT.
5. Civil Rights awards programs help to maximize the Coast Guard's
overall mission effectiveness through recognition of members'
accomplishments and contributions to Civil Rights and Equal
Opportunity in minority communities and Partnership in Education
