SUBJ: 102ND ANNIVERSARY OF VETERANS DAY
1. November 11, 1918 marked the end of hostilities in World War I-
commonly known as the "war to end all wars." Eight years later,
Congress passed a concurrent resolution, establishing November 11th
as a day to celebrate peace through good will and mutual under-
standing between nations. Over time, the name changed to "Veterans
Day" to also honor all Americans who served our Nation in uniform,
advancing peace in concert with partners and allies. Today, less
than one percent of all adults in the United States serve in the
U.S. Military; hence, military service is a noble cause that
relatively few have experienced.
2. United in Service, we support our Commander in Chief when he
says, "We will…uphold our universal values by working in common
cause with our closest allies and partners, and by renewing our
own enduring sources of national strength." Each of you embody this
enduring source of national strength. You support and defend our
Constitution. You safeguard our freedoms in times of war and peace.
The partnerships you foster, at home and abroad, enable a safe,
secure, and stable maritime system on which our Nation depends.
3. I am TRULY THANKFUL FOR each of you who chose to serve our Great
Nation, whether currently in service or as a former Coast Guardsman
and/or retiree. Your pledge to support OUR AMERICAN WAY OF LIFE AND
THE FREEDOM WE HOLD SO DEAR, sets you apart. On this Veterans Day,
I salute and thank you, as well as the families that stand with you,
for your honorable service and sacrifice!
