SUBJ: LABOR DAY
1. This ALCOAST is sent in observation of Labor Day. Observed
on the first Monday in September, this Federal holiday was
established to pay tribute to the American worker and celebrate
the social and economic achievements of the American Labor
Movement. The holiday originated in the late nineteenth century,
when labor activists pushed for a holiday to recognize the many
contributions that workers made to America's strength, prosperity,
and wellbeing. In 1916, Federal law benchmarked the 8-hour workday
/40-hour workweek. The Fair Labor standards Act (FLSA) of 1938
protected our youth from being forced into the workforce and
provided the foundation for our education system as we know it
today.
2. Recognizing those who came before us and who helped change the
way we work today is fundamental. It enables us to look broadly at
where we started and allows us to appreciate how far we have come.
The resiliency of the American worker is astounding. From the Great
Depression to the Great Recession, and now, through COVID, the
American labor force continues to persevere and so does our
Coast Guard.
3. Often seen as the end of summer, Labor Day is a popular time
to gather with our loved ones. Whether you're travelling or staying
close to home, take a moment to reflect on the resilience of the
American worker, which includes you. We are living in unprecedented
times of stress, and work-life balance is essential for our
well-being. Please use this Holiday to reconnect with family and
friends as you are able, and remember those still recovering from
the aftermath of Hurricane IDA.
4. Going forward, let us continue to strengthen our relationships,
while we celebrate the adaptable and resilient efforts that our
workforce puts forth each and every day. Stay safe, stay committed,
and stay ready. Semper Paratus!
