PORTSMOUTH, Va. — The Coast Guard volunteered to help prepare food baskets for hospitalized senior citizens at the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia and the Eastern Shore in Norfolk, Virginia, Aug. 11, 2021.

Fifteen crewmembers stationed on the USCGC Harriet Lane (WMEC-903) assembled over 350 food boxes of canned goods that will be used to provide meals for people experiencing food insecurity throughout Southeastern Virginia and on the Eastern shore.

“The Harriet Lane crew always strives to achieve “the desired effect”, the ship’s unofficial motto, and this was a perfect opportunity to implement that and I am extremely proud of this crew”, said Lt. Cdr. Victor Galgano, executive officer of the Harriet Lane. “A few of our petty officers led the way in putting this volunteer effort together and I was humbled to be able to participate and give some time and energy back to the wonderful Hampton Roads community that supports us.”

The USCGC Harriet Lane is a 270-foot medium endurance cutter homeported in Portsmouth. The cutter is responsible for a variety of Coast Guard missions, including search and rescue, law enforcement, defense readiness and marine environmental protection.
