SUBJ: MILITARY UNIFORM POLICY CHANGE NOTIFICATION
A. Uniform Regulations, COMDTINST M1020.6 (series)
1. This message provides guidance on the following policy changes to
Reference (A). These changes are effective immediately and will be incorporated
into the next release of COMDTINST M1020.6 (series).
   a. Female Hair, Chapter 2.B. of Reference (A):
      (1) “Women may wear hair in one to two braids or a single ponytail. The bulk
must not exceed the width of the head and a single ponytail or braid must be centered
on the back of the head. When styled, two braids will be evenly spaced and look
symmetrical on the back of the head when viewed from behind. The length must not
extend below a horizontal line centered between the shoulder blades. Members must
confine hair in environments where entanglement or other occupational safety
hazards exist. Situations requiring temporary hair adjustment include, but are not
limited to, operating/being near hazardous machinery or equipment, power
transmission apparatuses, rotary equipment, moving parts, hazardous chemicals, or
flames. Additionally hair must be secured adequately to prevent obstructing the
wearer’s field of vision.”
   b. Coast Guard Light Blue Dress shirts, Chapter 3.C.3 of Reference (A):
      (1) Both male and female CG Light Blue Dress Shirts will be discontinued in favor of the Air Force (AF) Light Blue Dress shirts. The AF shirts feature a new herringbone
stretch material that is more flexible and softer. The male shirts will maintain the
same design and cut, while the female shirts will see a change with the removal of the
flap closure front pockets and removal of the fly front button cover. Accoutrement
alignment on a pocket-less shirt shall be maintained in the same approximate position that it would be worn on a properly fitting light blue shirt with front pockets. Individuals are authorized to adjust the placement of the accoutrements to allow for shirt size and individual body proportions to achieve appropriate appearance and comfort.
   c. Coast Guard Wind Breaker, Chapter 3.C.11 of Reference (A):
      (1) “Wear with: May be worn with all configuration variants of the SDB (Dinner
Dress Blue, Full Dress Blue, SDB “A”, SDB “B”) while traveling and moving about
ahead of and after a formal event. The Wind Breaker replaces the SDB coat until the SDB coat is more appropriate, at such time the SDB coat will be donned.”
   d. Navy Working Uniform (NWU) III, Chapter 5.D.20 of Reference (A):
      (1) “Members authorized to wear the NWU III optional coyote ball cap, may
wear the optional black subdued metal rank device. The device will be centered
between the lettering and the bill of the cap.”
