Coast Guard seeks public assistance identifying owner of sunken sailboat off Hawaii Island

HONOLULU — The Coast Guard is seeking any information regarding a reported adrift 30-foot white sailboat which sank 6-miles west of Captain Cook, Saturday.

There are no reports of anyone aboard when the vessel sank. Anyone with information is requested to contact the Coast Guard Sector Honolulu command center at 808-842-2600.

At 11:53 a.m., Sector Honolulu watchstanders received a report from the master of a fishing vessel stating they witnessed an adrift sail boat taking on water and sinking. Another fishing vessel reported they witnessed the same vessel adrift earlier in the morning. Neither reporting source observed any signs of people aboard.

Watchstanders issued an Urgent Marine Information Broadcast notice to mariners and deployed an Air Station Barbers Point HC-130 Hercules aircrew and Marine Safety and Security Team Honolulu 29-foot Response Boat-Small to search the area for signs of distress.

Hawaii County Fire Department also deployed an Air 1 helicopter crew to assist.

There are no reports of pollution at this time.
