ALCOAST 015/21

SUBJ:  2020 DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE RESERVE FAMILY READINESS
AWARD CANCELLATION
A. COMDT COGARD WASHINGTON DC 091508 NOV 20/ALCOAST 407/20
B. Recognitions Programs Manual, COMDTINST M1650.26 (series)
1. This ALCOAST announces the cancellation of REF (A).
2. Due to COVID-19 and the vast difference in the manner
in which each Service and Command has been able to support
their Guard and Reserve members, the Department of Defense
(DoD) is canceling this year’s DoD Reserve Family Readiness
Award (RFRA).
3. There is a plan to reevaluate the RFRA later in 2021 to
ascertain the best recognition method for units going beyond
the call of duty supporting our reservists and families.
4. The current pandemic illustrates the critical importance
of maintaining fully integrated family readiness programs at
the unit level. Reserve family readiness extends beyond the
Port Security Unit (PSU) community and includes the home unit
of every reservist, especially for individual activations and
deployments. Unit commanders must always consider the individual
and family readiness of their entire workforce, including access
to family and individual support resources before, during, and
after activation and deployment.
5. Unit Commanders are encouraged to review the award criteria
in Chapter 7.A.4 of REF (B) for examples of the types of
activities that support overall unit and Reserve family
readiness.
6. POCs: For RFRA related questions, contact LTJG L.K. Carsia,
COMDT (CG-R55), Louis.K.Carsia@uscg.mil. For Family Readiness
and Family Advocacy issues, contact the Regional Practice Office
in your area: https://cglink.uscg.mil/8c9addf4.
7. RDML T. C. Wiemers, Assistant Commandant for Reserve (CG-R)
and RADM D. L. Thomas, Director of Health, Safety and Work-Life
(CG-11), send.
8. Internet release is authorized.
