1. All members are highly encouraged to pursue at least one Special Assignment
during their career. These career broadening assignments provide members
valuable opportunities to represent their Ratings, network, and learn about
other operational and mission support activities, making them ideal candidates
for future assignments to highly visible leadership and management positions
(e.g. Silver Badge, OIC, School Chief).
2. This message solicits candidates and outlines the application process for
members interested in a special duty assignment as a Company Chief at the Coast
Guard Academy, New London, CT in AY21. The Coast Guard Academy is the largest
accession point for officers in our Service. This unique duty entails great
responsibility that demands extraordinary commitment on the part of those entrusted
with the development, training, and mentorship of our future officer corps. Coaching
and mentoring the Corps of Cadets allow cadets to develop an intimate understanding
of the strengths the enlisted work force provides and also allows them to foster
their relationships with the Chiefs they will work with and rely upon for the
rest of their careers. Academy Chiefs receive Special Duty Assignment Pay AP-2.
3. Eligibility:
a. Tour complete in AY21 or AY22.
b. All active duty E7 members (not above the cut for E8 at time of application).
c. Meets the requirements listed in reference (B), CH 1.E.2 and 1.E.6.
d. Graduate of the CPO Academy or DoD Senior Enlisted Course.
4. Process/timeline:
a. NLT 21 AUG 2020: Standard applications are emailed to EPM-2 at
HQS-SMB-PSC-EPM-2-SpecialAssignments@uscg.mil and 'My Panel Submissions' for the
Leadership Special Assignment Positions (LSAP) are submitted in Direct Access.
b. OOA 22 AUG - 01 OCT 2020: CGA interviews applicants.
c. OOA 13 - 16 OCT 2020: Selection panel convenes.
d. OOA 23 OCT 2020: Panel results released.
e. The expected report date is 01 JUL 2021.
5. Standard Applications: Members and Commands should pay close attention to the
requirements listed in the standard application found at reference (A). Incomplete
or improperly formatted applications will be returned. Deadline extensions will not
be granted to correct errors.
6. The Special Assignments Officer will coordinate the release from rating process.
Applicants should not contact their detailer asking if they can be released from rate.
