Coast Guard to host media ahead of Fourth of July weekend

BOSTON — The Coast Guard is scheduled to hold two events to discuss Operation Dry Water and boating safety ahead of the holiday weekend, Thursday, July 2.

Operation Dry Water is a national campaign aimed at preventing boating accidents resulting from boating under the influence. With boat traffic expected to increase during the coming weekend, the Coast Guard aims to educate the public about the dangers of drinking and boating, and the importance of having the right safety equipment aboard.

The Coast Guard has seen a nationwide increase of 19 percent in fatal boating accidents in 2020 when compared to the same time frame in 2019. Fatal boating accidents in the Northeast have increased by 400 percent in 2020 compared to this time last year.

Who: Personnel from Coast Guard Station Boston and Coast Guard Station Menemsha

What: Coast Guard members will be available for interviews regarding Operation Dry Water enforcement and boating safety. They will also speak about the increase in recreational boating fatalities this year.
