STUDIES PROGRAM
A. UPDATE TO PY21 SCHEDULE OF OFFICER PERSONNEL BOARDS AND PANELS - PSCNOTE 1401,
ALCGPSC 061/20
1. The U.S. Coast Guard Academy Company Officer Leadership Studies Program is seeking
applications from eligible candidates. One officer will be selected for this full-time
graduate degree program commencing summer 2021.
2. This program offers outstanding leadership opportunities for high performing officers
who want to impact the future Coast Guard officer corps. Company Officers serve as role
models, mentors, and leaders for cadets and act as practicum supervisors for the Academy
leadership development process. Their role has changed over the years, and it is critical
we get the right people to lead today’s Corps of Cadets. They will work with Company
Chiefs to interact daily with cadets to implement, discuss, model, and reinforce sound
leadership principles and Coast Guard Core Values. Company Officers will partner with
the James M. Loy Institute for Leadership to develop and execute the cadet’s 200-week
experience. They have the opportunity to teach Organizational Behavior and Leadership
classes, sail/train onboard CGC EAGLE as a DWO, serve as sponsor family, instruct T-boats
and Nautical Science simulator labs, coach Academy sports teams, be an advisor for one
of 72 different activity groups, achieve their 100-ton license, and take advantage of
the various leadership classes offered at the Leadership and Development Center,
co-located at the Academy. Additionally, Company Officers have the opportunity to earn
their Level II CG-SEI20 Officer Specialty Codes for Training and Education Management,
and ICS Planning/Logistics/Operations Section Chief qualifications in the course of
their primary and collateral duties.
3. Officers chosen for this program will attend a one year postgraduate school program,
earn a Master’s degree, and then serve a three year follow-on tour as a Coast Guard Academy
Company Officer. The academic emphasis of this program includes theory, organizational
management, and the Coast Guard Academy’s leadership development process. Research topics
may be coordinated with the Commandant of Cadets Division depending on specific program
requirements.
4. Selectees will arrange college choices with the POC listed below. Recent selectees have
attended the following programs: The Eisenhower Leader Development Program (ELDP) at the
U.S. Military Academy with a Master’s degree in Organizational Psychology from Columbia
University; the Leadership Education and Development Program (LEAD) at the U.S. Naval
Academy with a Master’s degree in Professional Studies in Leadership Education and
Development from George Washington University; and the University of New Haven with a
Master’s degree in Industrial and Organizational Psychology (MAIOP). Further details on
