SUBJ:  GOLD ANCIENT MARINER SELECTION
1. I am pleased to announce the selection of CAPT(s) Patrick A.
Culver as the 16th Gold (Officer) Ancient Mariner since the inception
of the program in 1978. CAPT(s) Culver will assume the title of
Gold Ancient Mariner from CAPT Stephen Matadobra during a ceremony
held at Coast Guard Headquarters on 17 JUL 2020. CAPT Matadobra will
be retiring after 43 years of distinguished service.
2. CAPT(s) Culver is currently the Drug & Migrant Interdiction
Chief of COMDT (CG-MLE-3). He has over 12 years of sea time while serving
aboard 8 Coast Guard cutters. Notably, he served as Commanding Officer
of Coast Guard Cutter ALERT (WMEC-630), Operations Officer and
Executive Officer of CGC DAUNTLESS (WMEC-624) and completed tours of
duty onboard CGC OCRACOKE (WPB-1307), CGC SALVIA (WLB-400) and
CGC POINT ARENA (WPB-82346).
3. The Ancient Mariner title recognizes the officer and enlisted
person with the earliest designation as a permanent cutterman and
requires a minimum of ten years of sea time. The award recipients
must personify and uphold the core values of honor, respect, and
devotion to duty, along with the professionalism and leadership
associated with long service at sea.
