SUBJ: ASIAN AMERICAN AND PACIFIC ISLANDER (AAPI) HERITAGE MONTH
1. During the month of May, the Nation recognizes the challenges faced by Asian
Americans, Pacific Islanders, and Native Hawaiians and their vital contributions
to the American story. This year’s theme, "Unite Our Nation By Empowering Equality,”
was chosen by the Federal Asian Pacific American Council (FAPAC). The theme culminates
FAPAC’s 2017-2020 “Unite” series and focuses on diversity, inclusion, and leadership
to advance the AAPI community.
2. The vast diversity of languages, religions, and cultural traditions of AAPI
continues to strengthen the fabric of American society. As we remember the challenges
and sacrifices of millions of Asian immigrants and their descendants, we celebrate
their contributions in many professions and fields, including education, law, government,
business, science, sports, and the arts. From migrant laborers to inventive trailblazers,
the month is a time to acknowledge their hardships, culture, achievements, and beliefs.
3. AAPI have also served bravely in the United States Armed Services and have earned
numerous distinguished military decorations for their leadership, courage, and
patriotism. Accordingly, Asian American and Pacific Islanders have served with
distinction in the U.S. Coast Guard since the 1860s.
4. The Coast Guard proudly honors and pays tribute to Americans of Asian and Pacific
Islander descent and acknowledges the achievements of these citizens to our Service,
our Nation, and the World. In light of public health guidance requiring social
distancing during the COVID-19 pandemic, all commands and unit personnel are
encouraged use other platforms such as remote collaboration tools, websites,
newsletters, and/or social media to highlight and honor the accomplishments and
influence of AAPI to the history, culture, and achievements of the United States.
