ALAMEDA, Calif. — The Second Lady of the United States addressed spouses at Coast Guard Island in Alameda, Thursday.

Karen Pence addressed more than 150 Coast Guard spouses, service members and their families to highlight the important contributions military spouses make to the Coast Guard's readiness and strength.

"The reason our military is the best in the world is because our spouses, our families and our children who support that military are the best in the world," said Pence. "We also want our spouses to be fulfilled in their careers. My office is working with American businesses and other organizations to find ways to hire and keep military spouses employed when they relocate."

Coast Guard Island is home to more than a dozen Coast Guard tenant commands including Pacific Area, the 11th District, Maritime Intelligence Fusion Center Pacific and Maritime Safety and Security Team San Francisco. Coast Guard Island employs more than 1,200 people consisting of active duty, reserve, civilians, contractors and auxiliary personnel.
