MIAMI — Coast Guard cutters are assisting the U.S. Navy hospital ship USNS Comfort (T-AH 20) in November during its medical assistance mission in Haiti, the last stop of a deployment that covered 12 countries in South America, Central America, and the Caribbean.

The Coast Guard Cutter Margaret Norvell (WPC-1105) and the Coast Guard Cutter Kathleen Moore (WPC-1109) crews are providing force protection and enforcing a 500-yard security zone around the Comfort, as well as partnering with the hospital ship crew to provide medical assistance in Haiti, demonstrating the United States’ enduring promise and commitment to the region.

"The U.S. Coast Guard is here to ensure the safety and security of the U.S. Naval Hospital Ship Comfort. The crew of the hospital ship are working hard to assist with Haitian medical needs, ensuring their safety helps the crew accomplish that mission,” said Lt. Cmdr. Christopher O’Meara, Margaret Norvell commanding officer. “We appreciate the cooperation we've received so far from Haitian mariners, and ask that you continue to give Comfort a wide berth. The fast response cutter crews of Margaret Norvell and Kathleen Moore are proud to support the regional combatant commander, U.S. Southern Command and U.S. Navy Fourth Fleet in a mission that strengthens the relationship with our Caribbean partners."

The USNS Comfort 5-month multinational, multi-service and public-private medical assistance mission has treated 64,151 patients in Ecuador, Peru, Costa Rica, Panamá, Colombia, Trinidad and Tobago, Grenada, St. Lucia, St. Kitts and Nevis, Dominican Republic and Jamaica.  The ship is a widely recognized symbol of what people with differing backgrounds can achieve by working together, united by a shared purpose to assist others experiencing hardships or impacted by crises, disasters and emergencies.  The hospital ship deployment reflects U.S. enduring promise of friendship, partnership and solidarity with the Americas.

The Comfort is an 894-foot Mercy-Class hospital ship homeported in Norfolk, Virginia. The Comfort and its sister ship, the U.S. Navy hospital ship USNS Mercy (T-AH 19) each contain 12 fully-equipped operating rooms, a 1,000 bed hospital facility, digital radiological services, a medical laboratory, a pharmacy, an optometry lab, a CAT-scan and two oxygen producing plants. Each ship is equipped with a helicopter deck capable of landing large military helicopters. The ships also have side ports to take on patients at sea.

The cutters Margaret Norvell and Kathleen Moore are 154-foot fast response cutters. The Margaret Norvell is homeported in Miami and the Kathleen Moore is homeported in Key West.
