Coast Guard to commission cutter named after heroic African-American woman

CAPE MAY, N.J. — The media is invited to a commissioning ceremony Saturday for the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Angela McShan (WPC 1134), which is named after the first African-American female Master Chief Petty Officer.

Who: Commandant of the Coast Guard, Adm. Karl L. Schultz, McShan family members and the commanding officer of the new cutter

What: Commissioning ceremony for the cutter named in honor of Master Chief Petty Officer Angela McShan

When: 10 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 26, 2019 (Please arrive by 9:30 a.m.)

Where: Coast Guard Training Center Cape May1 Munro AveCape May, N.J. 08204

McShan joined the Coast Guard in 1979. She was the first African-American woman to be promoted to master chief petty officer and she had been slated to become the chief of Yeoman “A” School prior to losing her battle with cancer.

The Fast Response Cutter is one of the Coast Guard’s next generation patrol boats.
