Coast Guard rescue crews continue search for possible survivors of capsized migrant vessel just off Martinica Beach in Aguadilla, Puerto Rico

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico — Coast Guard rescue crews continue to search Sunday for possible survivors of a  migrant boat which capsized Saturday just off Martinica Beach in Aguadilla, Puerto Rico.

So far, three of the migrants have been recovered deceased by authorities ashore, while at least six others have been apprehended and are in the custody of the U.S. Border Patrol.

Search efforts for possible survivors continue as federal and local authorities account for all the migrants who were aboard the capsized vessel and apprehend any others who may have reached shore.

Coast Guard watchstanders at Sector San Juan were contacted at 5:15 p.m. Saturday by a 911 Emergency Service operator, who relayed a call from a bystander on scene reporting the incident.  Coast Guard watchtanders directed the launch of a Coast Guard MH-65 Dolphin helicopter from Air Station Borinquen and diverted the Coast Guard Cutter Joseph Napier (WPC-1115) to provide search and rescue assistance, and they notified local and federal law enforcement and emergency response agencies of the developing situation.

Other responding agencies include U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), Office of Border Patrol, U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement – Homeland Security Investigations, Puerto Rico Police and Puerto Rico Emergency Management Bureau.
