SUBJECT: ANNOUNCEMENT OF THE 2019 AMERICAN LEGION SPIRIT OF SERVICE
AWARD RECIPIENT
1. I am pleased to announce the selection of YN2 Justin McMullen, assigned
to Base Kodiak, Alaska, as the Coast Guard recipient for the 2019 American
Legion Spirit of Service Award. This award is presented to an enlisted
member from each branch of the Armed Forces who performs high levels of
community service. Presentation of the award will occur during the Annual
National Convention in Indianapolis, Indiana August 23-29, 2019.
2. YN2 McMullen distinguished himself through exemplary performance
and significant contributions to the local community of Kodiak, AK. His
selfless performance of civic duties, enthusiastic spirit of volunteerism,
tireless leadership, and unprecedented dedication to those less fortunate
has helped to improve the lives of others.
3. YN2 McMullen devoted over 640 hours of off-duty time to prepare and serve   
weekly meals to the homeless at a local place of worship, providing more than
1,600 meals to individuals suffering from emotional distress brought on by a
broad range of life challenges. Additionally, he served as a youth coach for
60 elementary school children under Base Kodiak's Morale, Welfare and
Recreation program at a local elementary school. He pledged a minimum of 125
hours to coaching development, helping children improve their existing
abilities to ultimately master new skills and increase their self-esteem.
4. YN2 McMullen's compassion, vision, and steadfast desire to improve the
lives of those around him, epitomize the very standards of the American
Legion Spirit of Service Award.
