SUBJ:  80TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE UNITED STATES COAST GUARD AUXILIARY
1. In 1939 Congress established an organization of volunteers to promote boating safety
in the United States and augment the U.S. Coast Guard. This month, we have the honor and
pleasure of celebrating the 80th anniversary of the Coast Guard Auxiliary and all of their
accomplishments.
2. In 2017, exceptional Auxiliary talents were brought to bear in response to Hurricanes
HARVEY, IRMA, and MARIA. Auxiliarists filled essential incident command post watch
positions, augmented active duty units, and provided over 19,000 hours of vital support
to the Seventh and Eighth Coast Guard Districts.
3. In 2018, the Auxiliary provided critical Coast Guard on-scene response to the tragic
“Duck Boat” sinking in Branson, Missouri. Auxiliary assets maintained safety zones for
over 100 hours, and were instrumental to the preservation of site security.
4. In the last five years, through its unheralded professionalism and commitment, the
Auxiliary conducted over 977,000 vessel safety checks and marine dealer visits,
delivered over 133,000 hours of boating safety instruction, logged nearly 17 million
hours of support, saved over 700 lives, assisted over 19,700 boaters in distress,
prevented the loss of more than 101 million dollars in property, and cast an indelible
image of superb service to our Nation’s maritime public.
5. I am extremely proud of our Coast Guard Auxiliary on the 80th anniversary of their
founding. Please join me in recognizing this significant milestone in a long and
distinguished history of service, by congratulating our Auxiliarists on their
outstanding performance and for 80 years of exceptional honor, respect, and devotion
to duty.
6. Admiral Karl Schultz, Commandant, sends.
