Coast Guard conducts third medevac in four days near Cold Bay, Alaska

ANCHORAGE, Alaska — The Coast Guard medevaced a woman from a fishing vessel near Cold Bay, Thursday.

An Air Station Kodiak MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew hoisted the 28-year-old patient suffering symptoms of a respiratory infection from the fishing vessel Golden Alaska approximately 36 miles northwest of Cold Bay. The crew brought her to Cold Bay where she was placed in the care of a Health Force Partners contracted crew early Thursday morning for further transport to a higher level of medical care.

Coast Guard watchstanders in the 17th District Command Center in Juneau received initial notification about the woman's condition from Health Force Partners at about 10:09 p.m., Wednesday. Watchstanders notified the duty flight surgeon who recommended a medevac.

The helicopter crew launched from Dutch Harbor and landed in Cold Bay to refuel before arriving on-scene. On-scene weather around the time of the hoist were 26 mph winds and 7-foot seas.

"Forward-deployed helicopter crews like this crew deployed with Cutter John Midgett, provide invaluable service to the fishing fleet in the Bering Sea," said Chief Warrant Officer Joseph Ayd, search and rescue mission coordinator for the case. "This same helicopter crew has conducted three medevacs since Monday. During this case they administered needed oxygen to this woman during transport."
