On the night of Feb. 18, 1979, the crew of the HH-3F Pelican responded to a call to remove an injured person from a fishing vessel. While hovering near the vessel, the aircraft experienced a critical power loss, settled into the water, and rolled over. Both pilots, one crewmember and a corpsman lost their lives in the accident. The flight mechanic survived and was rescued by the fishing vessel.

Editor's note: Media interested in attending the memorial service should contact Petty Officer Nicole J. Groll at 617-717-9609, no later than 2 p.m., Feb. 12, 2019.
