PORTSMOUTH, Va. — The Coast Guard medevaced a man from a cruise ship 402 miles southeast of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, Wednesday evening. 

The crew of the Anthem of the Seas notified Coast Guard Fifth District command center watchstanders that a 79-year-old man was suffering from symptoms of kidney complications and required a medevac. 

A Coast Guard MH-60 Jayhawk rescue helicopter crew launched from Air Station Elizabeth City in North Carolina and medevaced the man and a nurse.

The patient and nurse were brought to Air Station Elizabeth City where awaiting EMS personnel transferred them to Sentara Albemarle Medical Center in Elizabeth City.

"Rescues at sea can be complex and time consuming to coordinate," said Matthew Brooks, Fifth District command duty officer. "If you or a person you know feels ill, make the proper notifications soon to greatly assist in getting them the care they need."
