Coast Guard Air Station Borinquen receives 2018 DHS Secretary’s Unity of Effort Award

AGUADILLA, Puerto Rico —  Coast Guard Air Station Borinquen was presented with the Department of Homeland Security Secretary’s Unity of Effort Award Friday, during the 2018 DHS Secretary’Award at DAR Constituion Hall in Washington, D.C.

 

Air Station Borinquen was selected to receive the award for the unit’s teamwork and dedication displayed in response to Hurricane Maria, while ensuring the safety of Coast Guard personnel and families, and the citizens of Puerto Rico; and hosting and supporting various agencies at the Air Station.

 

U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Kristjen Nielsen and U.S. Deputy Secretary of Homeland Security Claire Grady presented the award to Coast Guard Lt. Cmdr. Lawrence E. Tormey, Air Station Borinquen facilities engineering officer, who received the award on behalf of the unit.

 

“It was an honor to represent Coast Guard Air Station Borinquen and the team of consummate DHS professionals whose local efforts enabled a swift and effective recovery in Western Puerto Rico from the devastation caused by Hurricane Maria on September 20, 2017,” said Lt. Cmdr. Tormey. “Our combined labors and constant presence formed the foundation about which the larger federal relief effort mobilized and as a result, we are even more prepared and ready to answer the next call to action in support of our nation.”

 

The 2018 Secretary’s Unity of Effort Award recognizes outstanding efforts in coordination, and unity of effort across the Department of Homeland Security by significantly improving efficiency and effectiveness. The award acknowledges group efforts within the Department or with external partners who assist in meeting our commitment of unity of effort. https://www.dhs.gov/unity-effort-2018

Coast Guard Air Station Borinquen is located on the Northwest tip of Puerto Rico and supports multiple missions including search and rescue, law enforcement, aerial support for Aids to Navigation, and logistic support. To accomplish these missions, the Air Station has four MH-65 helicopters.  Air Station Borinquen is under the operational control of Commander, Coast Guard Sector San Juan, whose area of responsibility extends approximately 1.3 million square miles.
