Coast Guard, Capital City EMTs medevac man from cruise ship near Juneau, Alaska

ANCHORAGE, Alaska — The Coast Guard and Capital City EMTs medevaced a man from a cruise ship near Juneau Thursday.
A 45-foot Response Boat-Medium crew from Coast Guard Station Juneau met the ship in Auke Bay, took the man aboard and brought him to awaiting EMS in Juneau.
The Coast Guard received the initial request at about 9:20 a.m. from the master of the cruise ship Noordam, to medevac the 74-year-old man aboard experiencing heart attack symptoms.
The Coast Guard boat crew launched from Juneau, with EMTs aboard from Capital City Fire and Rescue.
The Coast Guard and Capital City crew met the Noordam on the southern end of Auke Bay near Juneau where the patient was transferred. Once in Juneau, he was taken to Bartlett Regional Hospital.
The Noordam was underway in the waters of Glacier Bay National Park when the man initially experienced heart trouble.
"Transferring patients from one vessel to another at sea is always a challenge," said Coast Guard Petty Officer 2nd Class David Cross, response boat coxswain for the case. "But situations like today are exactly what we train for. Having the EMTs aboard along with our experienced crew made the operation go that much smoother. We wish this man a swift recovery."
