SUBJ: NATIONAL HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH
1. This year marks the 40th anniversary of the national celebration of Hispanic
heritage. The theme for National Hispanic Heritage Month 2018, observed September 15th
through October 15th, is “Hispanics: One Endless Voice to Enhance Our Traditions."
This refrain spotlights a rich and unique heritage manifested collectively in Hispanic
voices, traditions, history and culture.
2. Throughout our Nation’s history, Hispanic Americans have excelled as leaders and
trailblazers, united by a common hope for civil rights and a better future for their
families and fellow Americans. For decades, community leaders, activists, labor
organizers and everyday citizens have raised their voices in support of social justice
and equal opportunity. As a result, generations of Hispanic Americans have advanced in
numerous fields, from politics to entertainment, and brought honor and recognition to
communities nationwide.
3. This month also provides another opportunity to reflect on a few recent noteworthy
Coast Guard military and civilian achievers of Hispanic descent. This year:
SK1 Eduardo Gutierrez of USCG Finance Center received the League of United Latin American
Citizens (LULAC) Excellence in Service Award; Latina Style conferred its Meritorious
Service Award on YN2 Rita Martinez, USCG Base Seattle and Ms. Karen Gonzalez of CEU Miami
received the National Image Meritorious Service Award.
4. Throughout the National Hispanic Heritage Month, commands and units are encouraged
to recognize and celebrate the accomplishments of Hispanic Americans in service of our
Nation and the Coast Guard. For more information, contact Ms. Gwendolyn White,
(202) 372-4519 or Gwendolyn.E.White@uscg.mil.
