SUBJ:  UPDATE TO CUTTER SAFE-TO-SAIL (STS) MINIMUM CRITICAL EQUIPMENT
A. Cutter Safe-To-Sail (STS) Minimum Critical Equipment, COMDTINST 3120.21 (series)
1. REF (A) requires all USCG Cutters to have an Emergency Positioning Indicating Radio
Beacon (EPIRB) onboard, and for the EPIRB to be mission capable.
2. This ACN removes the requirement for the WLR fleet to carry an EPIRB when operating
on the inland waterways.
3. If an operation requires the cutter to operate on oceans, coastwise, limited
coastwise, or beyond 3 nautical miles from shore upon the Great Lakes, the vessel must
carry a Category 1, 406 MHz satellite EPIRB IAW with 46 CFR 141.380.
4. The contents of this message will be incorporated into the next revision of REF (A),
which will be released within the next year.
5. COMDT (CG-751) POC: BOSN2 Tyler M. Young at Tyler.M.Young@uscg.mil
