CHARLESTON, S.C.  The Charleston Area Maritime Security Committee (AMSC) was recognized Monday as AMSC of the Year at in Charleston.

After the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, the president signed into effect the Maritime Transportation Security Act, which required the establishment of AMSCs. The 43 AMSCs throughout the U.S. strive to enhance communication between port stake-holders within federal, state and local agencies to foster a culture of security, both traditional and cyber, within the port environment.

The Charleston AMSC serves as the foundation of security within the Port of Charleston. Due to collective planning, highly effective communication, working relationships and unity of effort, the Charleston AMSC has been selected as the AMSC of the year. The Charleston AMSC is receiving this recognition due to their cutting-edge collaborative approach to cybersecurity in the intermodal environment and their participation in numerous multi-agency operations that dramatically improved security within the Port of Charleston.

“When you consider our committee competed against ports like New York and Los Angeles, being selected as the preeminent AMSC in the Nation is a direct reflection of the commitment our partners have to ensure the Port of Charleston remains safe and secure,” said Capt. John Reed, Commanding Officer of Coast Guard Sector Charleston. “I am amazed daily at our partner’s commitment to protecting our homeland and their unwavering willingness to collaborate on all levels to ensure absolute success.”
