SUBJ: 2018 NAACP ROY WILKINS RENOWN SERVICE AWARD RECIPIENTS
1. I am honored to announce and congratulate Chief Petty Officer (CPO) Sheldon Williams,
Chief Electronics Technician at Surface Forces Logistics Center (SFLC), Alameda, CA, and
Mr. Paul Hewitt, Real Property Specialist at Civil Engineering Unit (CEU) Miami, FL as
the Coast Guard's recipients of the 2018 NAACP Roy Wilkins Renown Service Award. The award
recognizes outstanding contributions of personnel who support civil rights in the Armed
Services and civilian workforce.
2. CPO Williams is recognized for his performance excellence and selfless contributions
to our Service and the Bay Area communities. He is a strong advocate for junior personnel
and serves as a mentor for a diverse workforce of technicians. His dedication to promoting
equal opportunity is unparalleled and is evidenced by his leadership and supporting roles
in countless Special Emphasis Programs. Furthermore, CPO Williams displays extraordinary
devotion to enhancing educational opportunities for youth while serving as a Partnership
in Education mentor and athletics coach at the Oakland Military Institute. He volunteered
to assist with the Valor Games, a multisport event for disabled veterans and worked as a
Meals on Wheels Coordinator, dedicating over 120 hours to helping indigent members of the
local community. CPO Williams' commitment to service is an example for all.
3. Mr. Hewitt is cited for exceptional leadership in furthering the principles and goals
of civil rights within the Coast Guard and South Florida. He serves as the unit Leadership
Diversity Advisory Council (LDAC) Co-Chair, promoting a diverse and inclusive workforce,
while building leadership capabilities and improving the overall work environment. A stellar
professional and mentor, Mr. Hewitt advocates open communication regarding policies,
procedures, and practices to provide high quality work products and facilitate goal
accomplishment. Mr. Hewitt's high standards and exemplary performance demonstrate his
dedication to professional development, advancement and equal opportunity for all.
4. I commend CPO Williams and Mr. Hewitt for their outstanding achievements and exemplary
service. They both will be officially recognized and honored at the 43rd Annual NAACP
Armed Services & Veterans Affairs Award Luncheon, on 17 July 2018 in San Antonio, TX.

effectiveness through recognition of members' accomplishments and contributions to civil
