Coast Guard rescues man 8 miles east of Delray Beach

MIAMI — The Coast Guard rescued a man Thursday after his sailing vessel began taking on water eight miles east of Delray Beach.

Rescued was Jean Dextraze, 65, from Canada.

Watchstanders at the Coast Guard's 7th District Command Center received an emergency position indicating radio beacon alert at 6:16 p.m., registered to Dextraze's 38-foot sailing vessel, the Sainte Paix. Dextraze called watchstanders via satellite phone indicating his position and stated he had climbed into his dingy after the sailing vessel began listing.

A Coast Guard Air Station Miami MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew and a Station Lake Worth Inlet 33-foot Special Purpose Boat crew launched at 6:27 p.m. to assist. Palm Beach Sheriff's Office crews also launched to support.

The Dolphin helicopter and SPB crews arrived on scene at 7:03 p.m. The SPB crew recovered Dextraze and transported him to Boynton Inlet where EMS transported him to Bethesda Hospital East.

The sailing vessel sunk and is being monitored as a hazard and for pollution.

The cause of the vessel sinking in under investigation.
