Coast Guard suspends search for man in York River, Va.

PORTSMOUTH, Va. — The Coast Guard suspended its search for a man in the York River Wednesday.

The Coast Guard suspended at about 8:20 a.m. after searching with other agencies a combined total of approximately 553 square miles through Tuesday night.

The Navy Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron, Virginia Marine Resources Commission, James City County Police, James City County Fire, Virginia Dept. of Game and Inland Fisheries, Gloucester Volunteer Fire Dept. and others searched with Coast Guard crews from Station Milford Haven, Cutter Hawk, Boat Forces Training Center Yorktown and Air Station Elizabeth City.

"People join the Coast Guard to help save lives," said Capt. Kevin Carroll, deputy commander, Sector Hampton Roads. "But nothing can ever adequately prepare us for the days when we are not able to bring a loved one back home to their family, or to imagine the pain of their loss."
