Coast Guard rescues boaters in St. Andrews Bay

NEW ORLEANS – The Coast Guard rescued five people after their recreational vessel ran into a jetty inside St. Andrews Bay near Panama City, Florida, Sunday.

Coast Guard Station Panama City watchstanders received a report at 8:39 p.m. from a fisherman about a recreational vessel with eight passengers aboard running into the jetty inside St. Andrews Bay.

Station Panama City launched a 45-foot Response Boat-Medium boatcrew at 8:46 p.m. The boatcrew arrived on scene at 9 p.m. and transferred five of the passengers with no life-threatening injuries to emergency services at Panama City Marina while the Bay County Sheriff’s Department brought the remaining three passengers to shore.

EMS transported passengers to Bay Medical Sacred Heart hospital.

“Public safety is one of our primary concerns and boaters can ensure their own safety by having the appropriate safety equipment, being aware of their surroundings and having a designated boater,” said Master Chief Petty Officer Anthony Kannan, officer-in-charge, Station Panama City.

The cause of the incident is under investigation.
