EXCELLENCE IN DIVERSITY NOMINATIONS

1. Sponsor. Coast Guard Office of Diversity and Inclusion, COMDT (CG-127)
is the award sponsor IAW ref (A) and requests nominations for the 2018
Captain Edward R. Williams Coast Guard Award for Excellence in Diversity.
2. Award. The Williams Award is named in honor of Captain Edward R. Williams,
a retired Reserve Program Administrator, who was instrumental in the development,
implementation, and establishment of the Coast Guard Mentoring Program and the Coast
Guard Diversity Staff. This award recognizes the Coast Guard Officer or Chief Warrant
Officer (active duty or reserve), determined to have been the most supportive
of initiatives to achieve, value, and manage diversity in the Coast Guard. The award will be
presented at the National Naval Officers (NNOA) Symposium being held 8-9 August 2018 in
Portsmouth, VA. COMDT (CG-127) will fund travel orders and registration fees for the award recipient.
3. Eligibility requirements. (a) Demonstrated high performance as an officer
and role model with a commitment to Coast Guard diversity and inclusion
initiatives, (b) made contributions to the successful careers of others
through active and inclusive mentorship, (c) has proven accomplishments in
improving diversity and inclusion in the Coast Guard through recruitment
and/or retention efforts, and (d) made efforts to increase awareness of
diversity and inclusion in the Coast Guard through recruitment and/or
retention efforts.
4. Nomination. Commanding Officers may nominate one active duty or reserve
officer or Chief Warrant Officer, who has not previously received this award.
Nominations shall cover the period from 1 June 2015 to 31 May 2018 and be
submitted in memorandum format from the member’s Commanding Officer or first
O6/GS-15 in the chain of command addressed to COMDT (CG-127). Nominations
shall be no longer than three pages.  If a Commanding Officer is nominated,
endorsement shall be from the next senior command. Sample memorandums can be

5. Key dates. Nominations must be received by COMDT (CG-127) NLT 1 June 2018.
COMDT (CG-127) will convene a panel to select the recipient and the selection
will be announced via ALCOAST on or about 30 days after the application deadline.
