1. The 31st Annual Joint Women’s Leadership Symposium (JWLS) will be held 21-22 June 2018
at the San Diego Convention Center in San Diego, CA. This year’s theme is "The Power Within
You." The symposium is hosted by the Sea Service Leadership Association (SSLA). The purpose
of this symposium is to focus on opportunities for women in the military while exploring
options for the future. A full agenda has been developed to create a robust discussion
forum, speaker spotlights, and practical workshops. Additionally, the symposium will bring
together service members, decision makers, policy influencers, and leaders to address global
challenges to encourage and strengthen the leadership development within the Armed Forces.
Day one will be a joint service day, and day two will be a Coast Guard specific service day
put on by the Coast Guard Women's Leadership Initiative (WLI).
2. IAW REF (A) and (B), the Office of Diversity and Inclusion (CG-127) is the Coast Guard
coordinator for the event and has responsibility to account for all attendance and overall
costs to DHS. Coast Guard funded attendance is limited. All travel and registration fees
will be covered by unit funds. To request attendance, members shall submit a TDY Travel
Request Worksheet through their chain of command for unit-level approval. Once command
approval has been obtained, members must email their approved TDY request to:
HQS-SMB-JWLS@uscg.mil no later than 18 May 2018. Approval priority will be based on the
following criteria: a. first time attendees, b. junior members, and c. all others, with
consideration given to leadership experience. COMDT (CG-127) will issue final approval to
attendees via email. Once attendees are notified that their attendance is approved, they may
register for the conference. Additional guidance will be sent via email to all attendees.
3. Commanding Officers/OICs are strongly encouraged to support this professional development
opportunity.  However, attendance will be at the unit expense. If funding is not available,
permissive orders are also authorized IAW CH 2.a.10. of REF (C). Attendance via permissive
orders is unlimited for military members, but members shall notify COMDT (CG-127) via email
to: HQS-SMB-JWLS@uscg.mil for accountability.
4. DHS requires a post-conference report 30 days after the event. To comply, all travelers
must submit a copy of their settlement to COMDT (CG-127) via email to HQS-SMB-JWLS@uscg.mil
no later than 20 July 2018.
5. Symposium attendance information:
    A. Agenda information and registration is available at: http://www.sealeader.org/jwls/.
Attendees must register to attend. Plan for events to conclude at 1700 each day.
    B. The online registration will be available until approximately a week before the event.
On-site registration will be available; however, members are required to register on-line
once approved by COMDT (CG-127) for accurate accountability.
    C. Uniform of the day is Tropical Blue Long.
    D. Attendees are responsible for making their own travel and lodging accommodations
through ADTRAV.  SSLA has a room block at the government rate at the Hilton Garden Inn San
Diego Downtown/Bayside (address is 2137 Pacific Highway, Suite A), which is approximately 1.5
miles away from the Convention Center. Visit the JWLS website for additional hotel
information. Due to the limited amount of rooms and the number of expected military members
traveling, these rooms will go quickly. The group code is SE2. This room block is only
valid through May 22nd.
    E. There is a trolley system (San Diego's form of public transportation) within walking
distance of the hotel. It is recommended that attendees get the Compass Card, which is an
all access pass for $5. This is the recommended mode of transportation between the hotel
and convention center. Rental cars are not authorized.
    F. Make all reservations once you receive approval from COMDT (CG-127).
