SUBJ:  ANNOUNCEMENT OF MILITARY MENTORS FOR THE 2018 SENATE YOUTH PROGRAM

1. The Office of the Assistant to the Secretary of Defense (OASD) has announced the
selected military mentors for the 56th Annual U.S. Senate Youth Program (USSYP) for 3
March - 10 March, 2018. OASD reported there was an overwhelming response with
more than 50 nominations from across all five branches of the military to fill 17 slots.
Coast Guard received 33 applications, and we forwarded 16 to OASD. All were strong
candidates, and we are proud of the men and women who were ready to support this
important educational program.
2. The USSYP is an intensive week of educational activities in the nation's capital
encompassing meetings with the President, the Senate co-chairs, Senate leaders, a Justice
of the Supreme Court, officials from the Department of State, other executive agencies, a
foreign ambassador to the United States, and senior members of the media. All mentors
outside the National Capital Region must possess permissive orders at no cost to the
government during this period. USCG will not cover travel or per diem costs for selected
members per REF (A).
3. Coast Guard congratulates everyone selected by OASD to serve as military mentors.
