Coast Guard suspends search for person in water near Asilomar State Beach

SAN FRANCISCO — The Coast Guard suspended its search Thursday for a reported person in the water near Asilomar Beach in Monterey.

Coast Guard crews from Station Monterey, Air Station San Francisco and the Coast Guard Cutter Tern searched the area for 20 hours, covering 116 square miles.

Other agencies assisting in the search included Pacific Grove Police Department, Monterey Fire Department and Monterey Police Department.

The search began Wednesday night after Coast Guard Sector San Francisco watchstanders received a report of a man wearing a white shirt with orange accents who was stuck in the surf and yelling for help.

“Although the missing person’s identity is unknown, we appreciate the prompt report made by a good Samaritan that allowed emergency response agencies to launch a search,” said Cmdr. Jennifer Stockwell, the search-and-rescue mission controller for the case.
