Coast Guard Station Cape Disappointment pays tribute to lost Coast Guardsmen, mariners

Stations Cape Disappointment and Yaquina Bay are home to two of the four 52-foot MLBs, the other homes being Station Coos Bay located in Charleston, Ore., and Station Grays Harbor located in Westport, Wash.

52-foot History

There are only four 52-foot MLBs in the Coast Guard fleet, all serving in the 13th Coast Guard District and have been operating along the Oregon and Washington coasts for more than six decades.

The tolling of a bell is a traditional action done at Coast Guard memorial services because it provides a tribute of dignity, honor and respect for the person who was willing to sacrifice their all.

The Triumph and five members of its crew were lost during an attempted rescue of the fishing vessel Mermaid just outside the Columbia River Bar.
