NEW ORLEANS – The Coast Guard has begun initial assessments of the Mississippi River and its tributaries to determine if there are any hazards to life, the environment, or property following Hurricane Nate, Sunday.

The Coast Guard is actively working with federal, state, local, and industry partners to ensure satisfactory waterway conditions to systematically reopen ports across southeastern Louisiana when safe to do so.

The Coast Guard is also actively reconstituting search and rescue capabilities for near shore and offshore coverage as of Sunday morning.

Early preparation by and communication between federal, state, local, and industry partners helped minimize the potential for damage in the New Orleans Captain of the Port zone.
