Coast Guard responds to potential diesel fuel discharge
NEW ORLEANS – The Coast Guard is responding to a potential diesel fuel discharge near Greenville, Mississippi on the Lower Mississippi River, Sunday.
Coast Guard Sector Lower Mississippi River received a report from Wepfer Marine at 10:36 p.m. that the uninspected towing vessel, Miss Pat, sank while in a barge fleeting area in Lake Fergusen near mile marker 538 on the Lower Mississippi River for unknown reasons.
The crew of the vessel safely abandoned ship and reported the vessel sank with the bow exposed above the waterline. There is approximately 2,000 gallons of diesel fuel onboard.
There are no injuries, pollution or waterway closures reported. Soft boom has been deployed.
Coast Guard Marine Safety Detachment Vicksburg, Budwine surveyor, and a dive team are on scene. U.S. Environmental is the oil spill response organization.
The cause of the incident is under investigation.
