Coast Guard, partners searching for missing boater near Nine Mile Point, NY
BUFFALO, N.Y. — The U.S. Coast Guard is searching for a person in the water approximately one nautical mile off of Nine Mile Point in New York Sunday.
At 7:17 pm Saturday evening, Coast Guard Sector Buffalo Command Center received notification that a good Samaritan had retrieved two persons out of the water that stated they had been swimming for three hours.
The rescued persons stated their vessel had sank, one person was unaccounted for and reported the unaccounted for person was last seen inside the vessel’s cabin.
The missing person is described as a 250-pound white male who was wearing blue shorts, no shirt and no life jacket.
A Coast Guard Response Boat-small crew from Oswego, New York, Canadian air and surface assets, and Oswego Sheriff’s Department were launched to assist in the search. In the search area, the Oswego Sheriff’s boat located a debris field that contained a gas can, cooler, and a pack of cigarettes.
The Oswego Sheriff boat deployed their sonar to search in the vicinity of the debris field, but due to low visibility, was unable to clearly identify a vessel.
The Coast Guard, along with local and Canadian partners searched throughout the night and are continuing to search throughout the day using a helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station Detroit, a Response Boat-small crew, the Canadian Coast Guard Cutter Griffin crew, a Canadian Coast Guard rescue helicopter, and divers from Oswego County Sheriff's Department.
