SUBJ: SOLICITATION FOR MILITARY MENTORS FOR THE 2018 SENATE YOUTH PROGRAM
1.  At the request of the Senate, the United States Coast Guard will support the 2018
Senate Youth Program from 3 March – 10 March, 2018 in Washington, DC by providing
escort officers to serve as counselors, facilitators, and ambassadors of the armed forces.
2. This “Washington Week” is an intensive week of educational activities in the nation's
capital. The student delegates along with their military mentors spend every day and
every meal together with senior leaders of our nation, learning about all facets of public
service and gaining a deeper understanding of the interrelationship of the legislative,
judicial and executive branches. The five-star experience provides unparalleled access
and understanding of the federal government, including a meeting with the President of
the Unites States as well as extensive question and answer sessions with Senate
leadership, a Justice of the Supreme Court, officials from the Departments of State and
Defense, a foreign ambassador to the U.S. and senior members of the media.
3. Military mentors will interact directly with high school student delegates, offering
hem a unique opportunity to gain a better understanding of the armed forces and military
personnel.  As this is often the first exposure to the military for many of the students,
escort officers must epitomize Coast Guard core values and serve as role models within
their community.
4. Military mentors must be O-2 through O-5s that present exemplary personal attributes
and professional appearance.  They should be familiar with the roles and responsibilities
of the Senate, the federal government, and Coast Guard missions and current activities.
Military mentors must be completely available from 3 March – 10 March, 2018 and have
their command endorsement.  They will accompany delegates during all scheduled
activities in an intensive program that averages 18-hour days.  All mentors outside the
National Capital Region must possess permissive orders at no cost to the government
during this period.  USCG will not cover travel or per diem costs for selected members.
5. If you are interested in this program please email Deborah Claiborne at
Deborah.H.Claiborne@uscg.mil.  You will then be provided detailed information on how
to put your nomination package together.  The deadline to submit your application is 6

selections from all services.
