BATON ROUGE, La. – The Coast Guard presented four men with medals Friday for saving the life of a woman and her dog during historic flooding in Baton Rouge one year ago.
During the ceremony, Rear Adm. Dave Callahan, commander of the 8th Coast Guard District, presented a Silver Lifesaving Medal to David Phung and Meritorious Public Service Medals to Brandon Barrett, Jason Dixon, and Robbie Reynold.
Together, the four men rescued a woman and her dog Aug. 13, 2016, after the pair became trapped in a submerged car during historic flooding.
The Silver Lifesaving Medal was established by an act of Congress in 1874. It may be awarded by the commandant of the Coast Guard to any person who rescues or attempts to rescue any other person from drowning, shipwreck or other peril of water, at the risk of his or her own life.
