Coast Guard to hold centennial celebration of Diamond Head Lighthouse

HONOLULU — Media are invited to attend the centennial celebration of Diamond Head Lighthouse and open house event at Diamond Head Lighthouse, Aug. 5.

This hale ipukukui harkens back to 1878 when a lookout was established on the slopes of Diamond Head. It was later determined a more substantial structure should be built to warn mariners of the dangers of the reefs. As technology advanced the original ironwork structure built in 1899 was replaced in 1917 and has since been further modernized to use LED lighting burning at 60,000 candle power and shining 18 miles out to sea.

WHO: Rear Adm. Vincent Atkins, commander Coast Guard 14th District, and guests including Rep. Colleen Hanabusa, Hawaii 1st District, with representatives from Gov. David Ige and Mayor Kirk Caldwell's offices.

WHAT: Will commemorate the 100th anniversary of this cultural icon and landmark.

WHEN: Saturday, Aug. 5. Media should arrive at Diamond Head Lighthouse no later than 5:45 p.m. The official ceremony will begin at 6:15 p.m.

WHERE: Diamond Head Lighthouse, 3399 Diamond Head Rd., Honolulu, 96815. Media will be met at the parking gate to the lighthouse grounds by Coast Guard personnel. All attendees are reminded that only street parking will be available.

Please RSVP to Coast Guard 14th District External Affairs at 808-535-3230 by noon Aug. 3.
