PHILADELPHIA – Gov. John C. Carney, Governor of Delaware and Rear Adm. Meredith Austin, commander, Coast Guard 5th District, posthumously awarded Michael Manley the Silver Lifesaving Medal at an official ceremony held at Coast Guard Station Indian River, Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, June 24, 2017.

Manley was cited for heroic actions when he saw his stepson swept out to sea on Sept. 27, 2017. Manley entered the water and swam out to his stepson, instructing him to relax and stop fighting the current until he got to a calm area where he could swim ashore, which resulted in saving his stepson’s life. Unfortunately, during the course of saving his stepson, Manley was swept to sea and perished.

Manley’s wife, Amy Jo Fosdick, son, Michael Manley Jr. and stepson Andrew Short, accepted the Silver Lifesaving Medal on his behalf.

The Silver Lifesaving Medal, created in 1874, is a prestigious medal made from silver, awarded to civilian and Coast Guardsman alike who distinguish themselves by rescuing or endeavoring to rescue a person from peril on the water.
