Coast Guard rescues kayaker near George Washington Bridge

NEW YORK - A Coast Guard Cutter Albacore boatcrew rescued one kayaker in the vicinity of the George Washington Bridge, New York, Tuesday afternoon.

At approximately 4:30 p.m., watchstanders at Sector New York command center received report of a possible person in the water in the vicinity of the George Washington Bridge from the New York Police Department.

The command center issued an Urgent Marine Information Broadcast (UMIB) and launched the cutter small boat of the Albacore, an 87-foot Coastal Patrol Boat homeported in New London, Connecticut, around 4:45 p.m.

The Albacore small boat arrived on scene at 4:53 p.m., rescued the kayaker from the Hudson River and safely transferred him, in stable conditions, aboard a New York Police Department vessel. The NYPD crewmembers were also able to salvage the capsized vessel.

The U.S. Coast Guard and their partner agencies are committed to generating greater safety awareness among paddlers and small boat operators, to find out more about steps you can take to ensure you are prepared before heading out on the water visit www.uscgboating.org.
