PORTSMOUTH, Va. -- U.S. Coast Guard Base Portsmouth hosted the mayor of Portsmouth Wednesday, March 8, 2017, to celebrate the relationship between the official Coast Guard City and the Coast Guard.

The Mayor of Portsmouth, The Honorable John Rowe, visited Base Portsmouth to see first-hand the many assets that keep waterways in Virginia and beyond secure and the services Base Portsmouth provides to Coast Guard members and their families. They visited the Coast Guard Cutter Legare, one of six Medium Endurance Cutters stationed at base, and met Capt. Kevin Carroll, the captain of the port for Coast Guard Sector Hampton Roads. Mayor Rowe toured the complex with Capt. Brenda Kerr, commander, Base Portsmouth, and was accompanied by City Manager Dr. Lydia Pettis Patton and Councilwoman Elizabeth M. Psimas.

“Base Portsmouth has a strong tie with the City of Portsmouth, an official Coast Guard City since 2009,” said Capt. Kerr. “Our members are very active with local non-profit organizations and city sponsored events. We also conduct exercises and actual incident response with local first responders so maintaining a good working relationship with city officials is key.”
