Independence Day is upon us, backyard tomato gardens are blossoming, and swimming pools across the state are teeming with kids looking to beat the heat. Summer is officially here. The next few days are not only about fireworks and hotdogs - but also an opportunity to reflect on the American freedoms that were conceived nearly 250 years ago.
What does it mean to be an American? For me, I think a section of the Constitution's preamble that specifically reads "...promote the general Welfare and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity" really sums it up. As Americans, we are strong individualists - but we have a responsibility to ensure younger generations are nurtured and prepared for the road ahead. The USDA Summer Food Service Program is a prime example of this. Kids 18 and under who have come to rely on meals and snacks served during the school year - can continue to receive these during the summer months. Throughout the state, there are food pick-up locations, meals-to-go, and even additional monetary assistance for food purchases. If these programs sound like something that could be beneficial to your family, friends, or neighbors - please take a moment to visit www.fns.usda.gov/summer/sunmeals to learn more.
Since taking the reins at Missouri USDA Rural Development a couple of years ago, I have seen firsthand how this agency is woven into the fabric of our country. Whether it's funding hospital construction, promoting high-speed internet infrastructure, authorizing direct-to-consumer home loans, or making sure Missouri kids get enough to eat...we are here to be a part of the domestic tranquility that those who formed a "more perfect union" envisioned.
